Epilogue
(BRETT leaves the stage for the final scene; DEBORAH stands alone addressing the audience)
DEBORAH: When the moment finally came, it was not earth shattering, or momentous. Brett came in from work one evening and began to talk about how close he had come to quitting that day. He told me he had never been more miserable and depressed in his whole life. He said that there was only a small part of him that could see himself being happy in our marriage in the future. He said the only way he could see himself back on the right track would be if he returned to Savannah to start again. I thought, “Here we are. Back to square, fucking, one.” Something snapped. In less than twenty-four hours my conversations with Brett changed from “What would separation be like?” to “I’m looking for apartments next weekend.” I’d been to this point so many times in the past four years that it seemed strangely anticlimactic. Perhaps I didn’t allow myself to fully realize what I was doing. Perhaps I was just really tired of the whole thing. One thing was very clear to me. The time for dialogue was gone. The repetition of our words had eroded their meaning, anyway. Hurricane season was over.
